Health 101: Problems with your Respiration

x-ray result

Our respiratory system is comprised of a series of organs that are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. The respiratory system is vital because its role is to supply air throughout the body, allowing us to breathe and let our other organs perform its function.

In summary, the Live Science enumerates the different organs involved in the respiration process of a normal human body. These are the: nose, mouth, trachea — where the air is filtered, the bronchi — which carry the air to the lung. From the lungs, the air will be transported to the lobes, or what we call as the alveoli, where the actual respiration or the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happens. Afterward, the pulmonary capillaries will carry the blood containing the carbon dioxide. This is the function of our respiratory system in its healthy state.

Can you just imagine what will happen if this normal cycle will be disrupted? Once our body will fail to protect itself from viruses and diseases, we will acquire various infections that might be fatal to our respiratory system. Today, on the blog, we will discuss some of the different respiratory diseases that we need to be aware of.

  1. Viruses
Respiratory infections are primarily classified into two: viruses and chronic diseases. The first type is the viruses. These are common respiratory problems that almost all human beings experience. This may come in the form of the flu, cough, and sometimes coupled with fever. This is our body’s normal response whenever foreign viruses invade the body. There is no other effective treatment for this but to let the virus run its course. No antibiotic can ever hasten the body’s response to bacteria. Sometimes, we opt to take a rest and drink water whenever we have flu and fever.
  2. Chronic diseases
These are diseases that are fatal, in comparison to than the ordinary viruses that affect our body. Some have the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) from birth, while others acquire it. The nature of COPD is the combination of different pulmonary diseases like chronic bronchitis, asthma, and emphysema. Basically, people with COPD have several instances where they will have difficulty in breathing. Usually, chronic respiratory diseases do not have a permanent cure. Patients diagnosed with it are going to have to live with it all their lives.
The most severe pulmonary disease would be lung cancer. Although, the common notion of lung cancer is somewhat as a result from excessive smoking. However, science has debunked this myth by showing that non-smokers can be a victim of lung cancer too. The nature of lung cancer is due to the growth of abnormal cancer cells in the lungs, slowly affecting the healthy cells, as claimed by the American Cancer Society.
