Common Challenges Faced by People with Physical Disability

A physical disability can be caused by different factors. It may due to natural aging, a chronic illness, or an unfortunate accident. Whichever the case may be, the result is a weakened functioning ability. This affects one’s ability to accomplish day-to-day activities. And more often than not, it results in less independence.

A lot of people with disability require support from another person to be able to perform daily activities. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Walking
One of the most common challenges for people with a disability (PWD) is getting from one place to another. Walking, an activity which used to be so natural, becomes a challenge. With decreased mobility and range of movement, PWDs need assistance. This may be through both a caregiver and an assistive device (i.e. wheelchair and walking stick).
  • Bathing and Toileting
Bathing and toileting also become a challenge and a risk. The bathroom becomes a very dangerous place for people with a disability. With weakened muscles and limited mobility, PWDs are at risk of accidents, such as slipping and falling. Assistance inside the bathroom is, therefore, imperative. A caregiver must assist a PWD as much as possible. Upgrades must also be accomplished. Grab bars and railings must be installed in the bathroom to provide additional support.
  • Dressing
Getting in and out of clothes can become difficult when you lose your flexibility and balance. This is why people with a disability find dressing to be difficult. Bending the arms to get a shirt on and staying on one foot to get inside a pair of jeans become hard to accomplish. Additional support from a caregiver turns out to be a necessity to avoid an accident.

These tasks are simple to accomplish for many. However, it is not that easy for PWDs. If you have a loved one who lives with a physical disability, we recommend you to provide them with a caregiver. Our home care company in La Mesa California is made up compassionate and experienced caregivers who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of support. They are trained to assist with a broad range of daily activities while preserving a patient’s dignity and sense of independence.
