4 Facts You Probably Do Not Know About Asthma

Coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing: these are just some things familiar to people with asthma. But how well do you know this condition aside from the ones mentioned above?

Other than being one of the most common conditions, given the fact that 1 in every 12 people are suffering from it, asthma still remains a mystery to most of us.

So here are 4 facts you probably do not know about this condition:

  1. Allergies and asthma go together.

According to a research, allergens, such as dust mites, cockroaches, pollens, molds, and pets can cause inflammation to one’s airways. This leads to spasm and therefore brings asthma symptoms.

If you think your medicines are not doing anything to improve your condition, it may be your undetected allergies. To verify this, you need to be checked by an allergist so you can avoid your allergens.

  2. Adults can develop asthma.

Just because you do not have asthma as a child doesn’t mean you cannot develop one when you become an adult. Children at the age of 5 are more likely to be diagnosed with asthma but the condition can also develop at any time.

Why do adults get asthma? Adult-onset asthma is more likely caused by an allergic reaction to a chemical or two. You may have been exposed to these chemicals in your workplace. Other culprits can be your hormones, genes, and other aspects of your environment.

  3. People may experience asthma symptoms only when they exercise.

It is possible to have asthma only when you are active. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology. named this condition “exercise-induced bronchoconstriction” or IEB.

This can almost certainly happen if one is exercising during a cold weather. This is because you breathe air that is cooler and drier than the temperature in your airways. That is why you need to consult your doctor on the right exercises for you to prevent this condition from keeping you fit.

  4. Asthma worsens for adult women who are on their period.

Aside from the horrible PMS, most women with asthma claim that the attacks are worse when they are on their period or about to have their period. This is according to a study taken from the Severe Asthma Research Program.

Experts still do not know the real cause of this phenomenon. But another study points to women’s fluctuating estrogen levels which may have caused inflammation in their airways.
